Slide counts by stage
Earlier rounds are sold on the shift you are riding and the team's fit. Later rounds are sold on evidence, so the metric slides multiply and the vision slides compress.
- Pre-seed: 8–10 slides — problem, insight, prototype, team
- Seed: 10–12 slides — add early traction and a defensible market build-up
- Series A: 12–15 slides — cohorts, retention, go-to-market motion
- Series B: 15–18 slides — efficiency metrics, segment expansion, org plan
How long to present it
Plan for ten to fifteen minutes of talking on a thirty-minute call, because the questions are the meeting. That works out to roughly one minute per slide, which is another argument for one idea per slide.
If you cannot get through the deck in that window, you have a script problem: too many slides need narration to make sense.
Use the appendix instead of cutting evidence
Nothing needs to be deleted — it needs to be relocated. Everything a partner might ask for goes behind the ask slide, clearly labelled so it can be found in a scroll.
- Detailed financial model and assumptions
- Cohort retention and churn breakdowns
- Pipeline, customer logos, and case studies
- Product roadmap and hiring plan
Signs your deck is too long
Length rarely announces itself. These patterns do:
- Two slides make the same point with different visuals
- A slide exists only to set up the next slide
- Headlines are labels ("Market") rather than claims
- Body copy drops below 18pt to fit
